Budding Hospitality & Catering students kicked off the new academic year with a packed restaurant for the first service of the term in Oaklands’ very own College restaurant The Stables this week.

The team of Level 3 students delivered an exquisite three-course menu in the kitchen, with their front of house counterparts providing a warm welcome to the restaurant’s packed capacity of 40 guests, which included the  Deputy Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day and his wife Elizabeth.

The night marked the first in a string of Thursday night dining opportunities open to the public throughout the term, when paying customers can experience the students’ food and service. Over the coming weeks Level 2 and 3 students will be hosting Fine Dining, Themed Nights and will be introducing a ‘Stables Saver’ of three courses for just £15.

The open plan restaurant with industry standard kitchen facilities creates an engaging dining atmosphere with guests able to see the young chefs hard at work preparing and serving food. Under the watchful eye of Head Chef Martin West, students are involved in everything from preparation and delivery to service closedown – a like for like replication of a professional working restaurant.

Speaking after the service, Martin said: “The food and service delivered by students at this opening night has set a very high standard for a great year of dining at The Stables. We were thrilled to welcome the Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayoress and a packed restaurant of guests to kick-start the academic year.

“Following our AA College Rosette award in June, the pressure is now on to sharpen our skills and develop new ideas to get The Stables on the map as a destination restaurant for everyone in the local community.”

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Day said: “ It was special for me to open the new term at the Stables Restaurant as it is in the very building where I had my first office when joining Oaklands College as an agriculture lecturer in the 1980s. I was very impressed with the high standard of the food and service at Oaklands College’s Stables  restaurant. The food was beautifully prepared by the students and tasted delicious. There was also a great atmosphere in the packed restaurant for the start of the new academic year. I congratulate all the staff and students involved and wish them the best of luck for the year ahead.”
