Byron’s simply ‘wonderwall’ at plastering skills

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD — A TRAINEE proved he is one of the country’s most talented learners when he picked up a silver award in Britain’s biggest construction skills competition.

Byron Lancaster, 20, pictured, of Lower Barn, Hemel Hempstead, battled it out at Leeds College of Building over three days in SkillBuild 2011 before being awarded silver in the plastering category.

Byron, who attends Oaklands College, was also awarded a cheque for £300 at the award ceremony which took place at the Leeds Armouries on September 16.

He said: “I can’t believe it, it’s brilliant. There were a lot of trainees at the regional heats so it was great to get to the finals and now to win here. It’s just brilliant. I’m really grateful to my tutors who have really supported me – I couldn’t have done it without them so I hope they’re proud.

“It makes you think carefully about what you’re doing and how it can be better. I just want to keep learning more about plastering to be the best that I can be and hopefully go far in the industry.

“I’d definitely recommend the competition to other apprentices, it’s a great way to push yourself harder and stand out from the crowd.”

SkillBuild, is managed by CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry, with endorsement from WorldSkills UK.

Mick O’Flynn, regional delivery manager, CITB-ConstructionSkills East of England, said: “It’s an excellent way to drive high standards and to show members of the public or anyone considering a career in the industry.”
