Campaign Against Nuclear Arms holds workshop for students

Last week, Anna Liddle National Education Officer for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) visited Citizenship and Philosophy students to talk kabout the aims and work of CND as a pressure group.

Anna explained the origins of the CND movement, including the semaphore CND symbol that many use for peace. She talked about what Nuclear weapons are and how they have been used in the past, including their impact on the lives of people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Students were even able to watch an anime short film made by a survivor of the bombings to illustrate what happened on the day.

Anna used active teaching methods and had a ‘debate line’ where students went to different sides of the room in response to their views on certain questions about the issue. She also ran a competition and other activities designed to appeal to different learning styles.

The session was extremely informative and opened the students eyes to the risks posed by nuclear weapons.

The subject matter was horrible to contemplate, but the atmosphere and range of activities really stimulated enthusiastic participation in the room.

We look forward to welcoming Anna to the college again next year.
