Charity visit college

Free the Children speak to AS Citizenship students about volunteering

On 19 October Free the Children volunteers came to the College to talk to AS Citizenship students about their organisation; their aims and how students can become actively involved within their own communities.

The session was extremely interactive with students participating in discussions and debates on population, food and money.

At the end of the session students reflected upon their ideas and how they could be active with charities in the future. The students were extremely motivated and engaged throughout the session.

Free the Children was founded by Craig Kielburger in 1995, at the age of 12, when he gathered 11 school friends to begin fighting child labour, the organisation has now evolved into a global charity that work to provide healthcare, education, skills and training to ensure that all children have an opportunity to be lifted out of poverty. Free the Children empower young people around the world in order to make real change.

The volunteers from the charity commented: “We were thrilled to visit Oaklands College. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

“It was great to see just how engaged, mature and passionate your students are when it comes to improving the lives of others, we were really impressed with their enthusiasm throughout the morning.”

Free the Children have a variety of projects on their website and are happy to support active participation projects. For details visit www.freethechildren.com
