The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a one year course at level 4 which is the equivalent to the first year at university. The course leads to the Higher National Diploma (HND) in the second year. This programme is designed to provide highly relevant, specialised studies utilising industry standard equipment and vocational expertise that will prepare you for a range of potential careers within the Music and Music Technology field. You'll study a range of modules covering practical Music making and Music Technology and underlying the theoretical concepts, as well as developing skills in communication and broader academic study.

About the course

Our Music Department supports students in all areas of music, whether that be performance or production

At Level 3 students can choose to specialise in either a Music Practice or Music Technology pathway, while the Level 2 course provides students with an introduction that covers aspects of both production and performance.

Music Practice students will have the chance to perform at professional venues and produce professional standard recordings in our own recording studio.

Music Technology students will gain experience in sound engineering in our industry standard facilities, software and hardware.

What are the Course Requirements?

48 UCAS points, including two GCE A levels or equivalent, plus GCSE Maths and English with 4 points or at Grade D or above and ideally Music or Music Technology.

Prior experience studying either Music or Music Technology is desirable but students with alternative or vocationally relevant Music or Music Technology experience are welcome to apply. In all cases, applicants will be asked to attend an interview to assess their suitability.

Year 1 (HNC) Music in Context, Harmony and Composition, Songwriting Techniques and Skills, Music Composition Techniques, Band Rehearsal, Creative Arts Research, Studio Recording and Engineering Music Studio Production Year 2 (HND) Community Musis Projects,Work Based Experience, Public Performance Technology, Sound creations and manipulation, Audio post production, Live sound for small venues, Critical music listening Preparation, Process and Production in the Creative Arts

A variety of assessment methods will be used within the course. These may include; performance assessment, presentations, reports and recording assessments.

Students are expected to have headphones and to provide a hard drive for saving work.

An HNC is the equivalent to one year at University and an HND is equivalent to two years. The HNC and HND are recognised academic qualifications in their own right. Learners can potentially progress on to a final year at another institution to gain a Ba or Bsc

Fees

  • 16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
  • For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
  • Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
