The HND in Performing Arts provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the performing arts sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units. Students study the HND over two years of which an HNC is the first year.

About the course

Our Performing Arts Department is dedicated to making sure our students are able to grow as performers, while gaining the skills they will need for the workplace or progressing into Higher Education.

Whether you want to be on stage or behind the scenes, our courses offer you opportunities to develop your creative skills in an exciting and professional environment.

A passion for Performing Arts is essential as you will learn acting, dancing and singing. You are not expected to be an expert in all three but we are looking for students who are enthusiastic, willing and ready to develop and improve.

The Department is run by students as a professional theatre company, providing them with real life experience of the industry, opportunities to perform regularly and to undertake other job roles within the sector.

We have invested in our facilities and students can now benefit from a brand new professional theatre and dance studio.

What are the Course Requirements?

48 UCAS points including two A Levels or equivalent. GCSE Maths and English with 4 points or at Grade D or above and ideally Performing Arts (Drama, Dance or Music).

Prior performance experience is desirable and there will be an audition as part of the recruitment process.

The programme is designed to provide highly relevant, specialised studies with modules based around performance, work based learning and theoretical studies of the Performing Arts industry. Students will gain knowledge of how the Performing Arts industry works and develop an understanding of the full range of careers open to them within the sector. Students will develop their performance skills in acting, singing and dance as well as directing, stage management and technical theatre. Modules: Development of Acting, Singing techniques and styles, Dance practices in the community, Employability skills, Singing for Musical Theatre, Acting for Musical Theatre, Dance for Musical Theatre, Creatuve Arts Professional Practice, Creative Arts Research Skills, Preparation, Process and Production in the Creative Arts, Coreography of Group Performance, Musical Theatre Performance, Performing Arts Workshop Leadership, Popular Entertainment, Small-scale Touring in the Performing Arts, Historical Context in the Performing Arts.

Performing Arts students are required to purchase suitable rehearsal clothing which must be all black with no logos. This consists of black tops, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, jazz shoes or dance pumps and character shoes for performances. Cost approximately £80. The students have the option to attend trips to the theatre with the tickets ranging from £12.00 to £36.00. Optional residential trips, depending on the location, can be between £360.00 to £500.00. This would include hotel, trips, workshops and breakfast.

The HND in Performing Arts prepares you for career development within the performing arts industry as well as possible progression to an Honours Degree in a related subject.


  • 16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
  • For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
  • Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
