This course includes: Principles of Feeding and Watering Horses, Routine Stable Duties (grooming, clipping and plaiting), Horse Handling (incl. lungeing), Riding Horses on the Flat, Riding Horses over Fences, Principles of Horse Biology, Tutorials and Functional Skills. You will also have the opportunity to study for British Horse Society qualifications such as theBHS Preparation for Stage 1 and Stage 2 examinations.

About the department

Our Equine Department's teaching team are a group of highly qualified lecturers with a wealth of knowledge in this rewarding and challenging field, including competition and industrial experience. The team includes a BSJA accredited coach and veterinary surgeon.

Important Course Information

What are the Course Requirements?

Three GCSEs with 3 points or at D and above including English or Maths. You will also need to have experience caring for horses.

If you have a strong passion and comitment for horses and want to improve your riding and management skills then this course would suit your needs.

You will learn about the daily care of horses and a variety of skills you would need to work in the Equine industry.

Each module contains up to five assessments/assignments which are marked by your tutor. The assessments/assignments are then internally verified before being checked by a representative of NPTC.

The training for British Horse Society exams will be offered as part of your course. The exams will take place at Oaklands College Smallford. Students will be responsible for joining the BHS and entering and paying for the exam.

Success at Level 2 with positive references from employers and tutors will enable you to progress on to the NPTC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management.
