About the department

Our Horticulture and Greenkeeping Department's teaching staff come from strong industrial backgrounds. They are well qualified in a range of horticultural specialities as well as having many years of practical experience in the landscape, greenkeeping and horticultural industry. We have excellent links with the horticultural industries.

What are the Course Requirements?

Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above including Maths, English and Science. This is also a good progression route for those students who have sucesssfully completed the level 2 Diploma in Horticulture.

The qualification is aimed at students who wish to develop a career path within the Horticulture industry. You should have a general interest in horticulture with an aspiration to work in a industry sector that has many and varied opportunities such as landscape gardening, garden design, garden construction and maintenance. It is also a qualification designed to support those intersted in a supervisory role.

The course is both practical and accademic in nature and its purpose is to provide centre-based provision designed for people who may want to progress further with college education and/or employment in the horticultural sector (e.g. gardener, landscaper, nursery worker, groundsman, golf greenkeeper etc). You will cover a wide range of subjexcts including mbusiness management, construction of hard landscape features, garden design, horticultural machinery operations, horticultural science, identification of trees and shurbs, landscape maintenance, ornamental plant production and turf management.

For the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture candidates must complete core units plus the required optional units. Every unit is assessed through written assignments and practical assessments. These tasks are set by NPTC, and marked internally by the centre.
