UAL qualifications are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the media sector. The one year diploma provides an opportunity for those with an interest in media to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study. You will learn about a range of media industries, which will include the study of film, television and print. You will learn to research, plan and produce media products as part of a creative team using digital software. You will improve your ability to work independently and as part of a team when you learn production skills whilst increasing your ability to communicate and to use IT and numerical skills.

About the department

Our Media Department is a dynamic and forward thinking department dedicated to expanding the skills and minds of our students. You will be able to work creatively with film, video and print, with the guidance of highly skilled teaching staff with extensive experience of working in the industry.

You will have access to our state-of-the-art media suites, featuring industry standard hardware and software, to ensure you are familiar with the equipment you will come across while working in the industry.

We will help you build on existing skills and develop new ones, to make sure you are fully prepared to work in the media industry, or progress further into Higher Education.

 

Important Course Information

What are the Course Requirements?

4 GCSEs with 4 points or at GradeC or above including English and maths.

All students who have a keen interest in the range of disciplines covered by the media will benefit from the course. You will need to be organised, committed and willing to work independently and as part of a group (often in your own time).

You will study: Unit 1: Introduction to media processes and technical skills Unit 2: Introduction to design and research skills in creative media production Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in creative media production Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness Unit 5: Investigating audio production and technology Unit 6: Investigating visual production and technology Unit 7: Investigating interactive media production and technology Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two year qualification and will provide the student with a measure of self-directed learning in the completion of a substantial Creative Media Production & Technology project. It will require the student to make use of the skills, knowledge and understanding developed in units 5 - 7 to complete a creative media production project. It will provide the student with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in greater depth. The Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology will also provide students with opportunities to develop and utilise broad, transferable skills through encouraging an ethos of personal and professional development. They include: Initiative independent inquiry, creative thinking, reflective learning, team-working, self-management, effective participation, problem solving and communication.

Students will be assessed through written and practical assignments that will provide the learning necessary to enable the student to achieve the assessment criteria. Units 1 - 7 of the Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology will be internally assessed and internally moderated against the assessment criteria for those units. Unit 8, the final unit of the Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology, will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated against the assessment and grading criteria for those units. Unit 8 is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall final grade for the qualification.

As part of the study programme requirements students will also attend English and/or Maths GCSE/Functional skills lessons alongside the normal programme of study (this applies to all students who have a grade D or below on entry.) Students will also complete 30 hours work experience (per year), weekly tutorials and study periods.

A pass in this course will enable you to study Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology
