About the department

For those of you already in employment within the construction industry, options exist to study courses on day-release, block-release or evening programmes according to the trade. Apprenticeships are also available. You will be taught by a dedicated team of tutors with experience and knowledge of the business world.

What are the Course Requirements?

Four GCSEs with 4 points or at Grade C or above including English, Maths and Science or successful of a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in a related vocational area.

The course provides a specialist work related programme of study covering key knowledge and skills required in the sector. It is broadly equivalent to 3 A levels in preparation for employment in the construction industry and progression onto the HNC in Construction or Civil Engineering. The qualification offers an engaging programme for all students over 16 In association this qualification is designed to facilitate learners who are clear about their employment choice, and wish to embark on a career in the construction industry. It also provides a suitable qualification for those wishing to change career or move into the Construction Industry following a career break.

A variety of assessment methods are used on the course such as case studies, assignments, presentations, work-based assessments together with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.

The course is Full Time for a duration of Two Years. Attendance: 2.5 days per week for 35 weeks each year between September and June. Fees: Fees to cover tuition, materials and the Edexcel registration are reviewed annually and published separately. There are no tuition fees for students under 19 years of age on 31 August in the calendar year when they start the programme of study. Equipment:Drawing equipment for A3 size drawings and basic stationery, including a lever arch file for collection of notes and coursework. For site visits a pair of safety boots is advised. Hard hats and reflective safety clothing is provided for student use. Progression:This qualification provides access, subject to appropriate grades onto HNC and Degree level courses in Construction/Civil Engineering/Surveying/Architecture and Planning.

Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Construction can lead to progression on to the HNC in Construction or other Higher Education courses or alternatively into employment within the construction and property industry.
