Equine Studies

The course is a combination of practical skills sessions based on the equestrian centre, class based theory lessons and 5 days of work experience. The course has seven units, which you study towards throughout the year including: Safe and Effective Working Practices, Develop Performance, Industrial experience, Assist with the handling and restraint of animals (horses), Assist with the exercise of animals (horses), Assist with the preparation for exercise and aftercare of horses and Maintain the health of horses. As this course is part of the foundation learning tier, you will be required to complete Functional Skills in Maths and / or English at a level suitable to your ability.

About the department

Our Equine Department's teaching team are a group of highly qualified lecturers with a wealth of knowledge in this rewarding and challenging field, including competition and industrial experience. The team includes a BSJA accredited coach and veterinary surgeon.

What are the Course Requirements?

No formal entry qualifications.

This course is suitable if you have some experience with horses and wish to learn more about horse care.

The course consists of the following modules: Safe and effective working practices, Develop performance in Land Based industries, Industrial experience in Horse-based industries, Assist with the handling and restraint of horses, Assist with the exercise of horses, Assist with the preparation for exercise and aftercare of the horse, Maintain health of the horse. The course offers a range of subject areas giving you an introduction to the skills needed when working in the equine industry, to include health and safety, developing your personal, vocational and employability skills, working individually and as part of a team. The Level 1 Diploma is awarded by City & Guilds and taught at Oaklands College. Application for the full-time course should be through Oaklands admissions team.   • 16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
  • For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
  • Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
