Level 3 Access to HE Health & Social Care
This course is for learners interested in a career in nursing, midwifery and other health professions (Please note that for some health professions such as radiology, pharmacy etc. the science pathway may be the better option. Please ask for advice). Core units cover academic writing, communication skills and study skills. You will study health care principles, health and disease, mental health, psychology and mathematics for nursing. In addition we will help and support you in making a UCAS application and prepare you for Higher Education.
Course Content - What will I learn?
You will study the following units: introduction to Healthcare, Professional Interpersonal Skills, Safeguarding Children and Young People, Care Principles and Human Anatomy and Physiology, Health Psychology, Health or Social Care: Ethics and Values, Mental Health and Illness, Introduction to Health and Disease, Cells and Tissues and complete a research project. You will also study units aimed at developing your learning skills: Preparation for Higher Education, Drug Calculations and Health Related Charts, Academic Writing, Communication – Speaking and Listening and Promoting wellbeing
Am I right for the course?
You will be over19 years and have been out of formal education for one year.
This pathway is for learners who are currently working in the health sector and wish to develop their careers or those looking for a new challenge. The course is one year full time (normally three or four days a week). Attendance is important given the intensive nature. In certain circumstances the College may be able to help with child care and other costs incurred.
Access to HE is an intensive course and it is important that you understand the commitment. We will ask you to complete initial assessments in English and maths. We would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you are working at Level 1 in maths and Level 2 in English (GCSE level). In addition you will have an interview with an Access to HE lecturer.
Each unit is assessed through an assignment. This may be a piece of written work, controlled assessment or presentation. Most units are graded pass, merit or distinction. On completion the numbers of passes, merits and distinctions may be used to calculate a UCAS Tariff. Universities will generally set a target for merits / distinctions or a Tariff.
You may take one GCSE/ Functional Skills (English or maths) alongside the main programme. If you need these qualifications it is best to talk to one of the Access Team.
Oaklands College has a team of experienced and specialist subject staff who have industry experience and deliver the teaching and learning on the programme. In addition there is a dedicated team of personal tutors who will help you develop your study skills and support you in reaching your full academic potential.
The course is very popular and an early application is advisable in order to avoid disappointment. We will ask you come into college to discuss the course and your aspirations with a member of the Access Team. You will asked to take an initial tests in English and maths.
On completing the Access course many of our students will continue their education at the University of Hertfordshire. Others choose to go further afield and continue their studies at various universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
