Overview
The Access Diploma will provide you with the underpinning skills to support academic study and provide a level 3 qualification linked to your proposed HE study. A broad range of scientific and pharmaceutical skills will be acquired, whilst the underpinning mathematical skills will ensure that you are fully prepared for progression onto a relevant degree.
The Diploma covers a range of specialist pharmaceutical units as well as having a strong emphasis on both biology and chemistry and you will have the opportunity to study all three subjects to give a balanced view of skills to enable progression to pharmacy or science based degree programmes.
Course Content - What will I learn?
Mandatory units include:
Actions of Medicine on the Human Body
Fundamental Chemistry
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Introduction to Organic Chemistry
A research project
You will also develop your academic writing skills, mathematics for science and preparation for Higher Education.
Am I right for the course?
You will be over 19 years old and have been out of formal education for one year.
This course is designed for anyone looking to start a career in pharmacy or pharmaceutical science or considering changing careers to work in this field.
Access to HE is an intensive course and it is important that you understand the commitment. We will ask you to complete initial assessments in English and maths. We would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you are working at Level 1 in maths and Level 2 in English (GCSE level). In addition you will have an interview with an Access to HE lecturer.
Each unit is assessed through an assignment. This may be a piece of written work, controlled assessment or presentation. Most units are graded pass, merit or distinction. On completion the numbers of passes, merits and distinctions may be used to calculate a UCAS Tariff. Universities will generally set a target for merits / distinctions or a Tariff.
You may take one GCSE/ Functional Skills (English or maths) alongside the main programme. If you need these qualifications it is best to talk to one of the Access Team.
Oaklands College has a team of experienced and specialist subject staff who have industry experience and deliver the teaching and learning on the programme. In addition there is a dedicated team of personal tutors who will help you develop your study skills and support you in reaching your full academic potential.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
