Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Applied Science

Overview

This is a one-year Level 2 Vocational Science qualification. It is equivalent to 4 GCSEs and consists of 12 units assessed over three terms. You will have the opportunity to attend Guest speaks from various science laboratories to enhance your learning at college. On completion you will gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, which could provide a pathway to a Level 3 qualification, for example: the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science or Forensic Science.

Course Content - What will I learn?

Maths and English is an integral part of the course and is embedded in every session. Maths skills include analysis of statistical data and basic mathematical skills and concepts, English skills includes communication, presentation, writing etc. You will also cover a range of science topics including biology, chemistry, and physics. You will gain further knowledge and understanding of the role of science in the workplace and develop technical skills by carrying out a variety of practical activities. All assignments will have a vocational aspect, so you will get the opportunity to see how relevant this subject is in the world of work.

Am I right for the course?

You should have an enthusiasm for science and a keen attitude to work on set tasks. You should be able to work independently and as part of a group. As this course is assignment and exam based, you will require good organisational and time management skills.

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9 – 3 including a grade 4 in either maths or English and a Level 1 qualification.

You will be assessed on written assignment work, practicals, exams, and verbal presentations.

You will also complete a GCSE retake in English and/or maths qualification as part of your study programme if you do not already have a grade 4 / c or above in GCSE English or maths.

By studying Applied Science at Oaklands you will have your mind open to the broad spectrum of sciences to problem solving. You will be taught by experienced, qualified lecturers whose areas of expertise include all three Sciences.

What Next?

You may progress on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma – provided you successfully complete the course and meet progression criteria.

On completion of the Applied Science course you will have the ability to apply to university to further develop your skills in this fascinating subject. You will receive support for applications to university or work with training to pursue your career in the range of jobs associated with Forensic Investigation.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
