Heritage and Traditional Crafts for Adults: Weds 09:30 – 15:00 – 25 weeks
This new course for adults (age 19+) is aimed at beginners, as well as those with some experience of crafts, who wish to gain a formal qualification in the subject. Successful completion will lead to an NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Arts: Heritage & Traditional Crafts.
The course will be held on Wednesdays (09.30 – 15.00) over 25 weeks (term time only) starting 21 September 2022 and ending 7 June 2023.
Course Content - What will I learn?
In this exciting new 25-week course, leading to a nationally recognised L2 qualification, we will be championing heritage and traditional crafts. You will explore a wide range of craft practices in our well-equipped Textiles, Print and 3D studios, including techniques such as creative papermaking, batik, shibori, basket-making, willow-weaving, felting and natural dyes, as well as bookbinding and traditional printmaking processes, including letterpress.
All processes will be demonstrated and you will be guided and supported throughout the course by your tutor. We will look at the work of contemporary and traditional craftmakers and craft enterprises.
You will have the opportunity to develop your own creative ideas and create a body of work during a number of Personal Development Days. You will also be given the opportunity to participate in a Group Exhibition of your work at the end of the year to display your most successful outcomes.
Am I right for the course?
This course is aimed at complete beginners as well as those with some existing craft skills who wish to develop their own practice and gain a Level 2 qualification in the subject. If you like the idea of spending one day a week exploring new materials and processes, you will enjoy the range of opportunities to develop your skills further. You will make notes and record ideas in a sketchbook which will be provided as part of the course. This will be done with full support from your tutor. In the course, we will look at the work of contemporary crafts people and how they show and sell their work.
The course is part-funded and the total fee for the year is £360 for adults aged 24+. The course is free for those aged 24+ who are unemployed and on benefit or who earn less than £18,525 gross. Students aged 19-23 should check with Admissions re Fee remission.
No formal entry requirements. The course is aimed at adults (age 19+) who are complete beginners, but it is also be suitable for those with existing craft skills who wish to gain a Level 2 qualification.
Your tutor will observe your progress over the course and provide you with supportive and encouraging feedback. Your sketchbook will be a useful means to make notes, record your ideas and to provide evidence of the work you have created.
All materials and equipment necessary for the course will be provided. There is no materials fee.
You will be taught by a skilled teacher who has a relevant Arts Degree and a post-graduate Teaching Diploma. Your teacher will encourage and support you to enjoy and achieve throughout the course.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
