Overview
The Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery is designed to give learners their
first experience or expand on previous experiences in Bench Joinery. The aim of
the course is to put in place all the skills and knowledge that is required to
become a good bench joiner.
This part-time course is held one day per week over the course of the
academic year and consists of two core units: Know how to carry out
safe working practices and Principles of Construction. In addition to the
core units you will study four practrical units: Know how to produce
setting out details for routine joinery products, Know how to mark setting out
details for routine joinery products, Know how to manufacture joinery products,
Set up & operate a circular saw.
Course Content - What will I learn?
You will learn about the tools you use as a Bench Joiner (hand/power) and how to use them. The materials, the techniques, health & safety, the construction industry in general & employment rights (employee & employer).
Am I right for the course?
This course will help you to take your first steps into Bench Joinery aiding in the process of seeking employment in the construction industry. You must have the ability to work with others and on your own, some problem solving skills and the willingness to accept ownership of your qualification. You will need to be able to work to a high standard and recognise the standards required from industry and the awarding body. Good visual awareness is desirable, however, you will be able to develop this during the course.
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9 – 3 including a grade 4 in either maths or English and a Level 1 qualification.
In order to complete this course, you will need to pass six theory assessments, 3 practical assessments and also undertake 40 hours of work experience in a trade related placement.
It is a necessary for learners to achieve a minimum of 85% attendance in order to pass with awarding body points scheme in place to ensure progress. All learners are required to complete Level 1 Functional skills qualifications.
You will be taught by teachers with a range of experience in both site carpentry and bench joinery. All tutors are qualified carpenters from industry and have a varried range of skills in relation to carpentry & joinery. The tutors are supported by technicians with relevant qualifications and industrial experince. Your NVQ qulification will be supported by an assessor who again comes from industry with the relevant qualifications and experience.
What Next?
On completion of the level 2 course you could progress onto a Construction Mangement course or onto a Level 2 Site Carpentry course. You could also progress to an Apprenticeship.
Many carpenters and joiners are self-employed. You could also find work with large construction companies, local authorities, shopfitting firms, or in set-building for theatre and television.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
