Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup Studies
Overview
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up Studies is a vocational qualification that will develop your knowledge and understanding of the skin, health and safety, hair and media make-up products and equipment. You will develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of make-up products, using different techniques. You will also develop a range of basic technical hairdressing skills, which will prepare you for the next level of learning in this sector.
The practical skills are taught in a bespoke make up studio and practice is undertaken on models and clients, allowing students to gain experience in our safe environment.
The following units are mandatory and must be complete to achieve the full qualification:
- Health and safety in the salon
- Anatomy and physiology for make-up services
- Apply make-up and Instruction of makeup application
- Photographic make-up
- Face painting
- Eyebrow tinting and shaping
- Eyelash Perming/Lifting
- The art of dressing hair and Plaiting and twisting hair
The primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you to develop your skills further enabling you to undertake a Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up.
Am I right for the course?
You need to have a keen interest in both hair and make-up and be looking to work in this industry. You need to enjoy working and communicating professionally with people. As part of the course you will need to perform treatments on clients and peers. It is a requirement that students wear uniform and meet salon standards, this includes wearing hair up and being presentable at all times.
You will have to complete a minimum of 20 hours work experience within the industry outside of your timetabled hours. Distance learning tasks are undertaken with the support of your tutors and you will require time to complete these tasks outside of timetabled hours.
Three GCSEs with 3 points or at Grade D or above or a relevant Level 1
qualification.
Assessment is evidenced in a portfolio of work. Assessments include examination, observation, written assignments and oral questioning. You will treat clients and models in the commercial salons and makeup studio and will receive practice treatments from students.
You are required to purchase a Kit and uniform (approx. £400) that will provide you will all the equipment required to use in practical sessions and work experience. You are required to attend professional industry exhibitions and seminars to further your knowledge in the hair and make-up industry, this will be an additional expense. You will be required to purchase additional research material such as text books.
You will need to show that you have developed your Maths and English skills whilst you are on the course. This may mean you sit GCSE’ s or Functional Skills qualifications.
Your teachers and assessors will have a minimum of five years industry experience supporting your learning and assessment targets and plans. You will be supported by an internal verifier throughout the assessment process
What Next?
To apply for this course you need to put in an application online and attend an interview. You may want to support this interview by producing a sketch book showing your interest and experience in Make-up and Hair. You may also be require to complete a interview task.

Depending on the level you choose to study, we recommend that you carry on climbing the ladder within Oaklands, and then onto university or into employment.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
