Overview

This innovative new course is aimed at anyone who has a Level 3 qualification in a creative subject and would like to combine their personal artistic practice with learning the skills to successfully plan, promote and run their own creative business. There is a huge variety of potential marketplaces for creative practitioners, and this course will help you to find your own space in this lively and competitive field. Applicants can come from any creative discipline, examples potentially include painters, illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, textile artists, photographers or ceramicists, but we are happy to hear from anyone who has a strong creative idea!
The course will run for 1 year commencing September 2022 and ending in June 2023.

Course Content - What will I learn?

This course supports you to continue your independent creative practice with access to the college’s facilities as required, this includes studios for Print, 3D, Ceramics, Fashion & Textiles, Photography and Graphic Design. You will initiate and direct your own work with regular support from your lecturer.
In addition, you will learn practical business and marketing skills to enable you to set up as a freelance practitioner. These include writing an effective business plan, applying for funding, creating a commercial social media presence, developing, and pitching your brand and understanding the requirements for the day to day running of your business. You will be supported by regular tutorials with your lecturer and taught sessions and seminars with your peers.

Am I right for the course?

This course is aimed at those who have completed a Level 3 creative qualification and would like to continue with their studies, but with a career-oriented focus. The course is also suitable for adult learners who have good creative skills and are looking for support to develop these into a business.
Applicants will be invited to an interview and are required to bring a portfolio of recent creative work.

An existing Level 3 qualification (Extended Diploma or A levels) in a creative subject. Adult learners will be required to submit a portfolio of recently completed work.

The course is structured into three units across the year, the first two are formative and are marked as Pass/Refer. The final unit will determine the course grade and is marked at Pass/Merit/Distinction. You will be supported by continuous feedback and tutorials with your lecturer throughout the course and by the submission of a body of required work at the close of each unit.

You will be taught by a skilled teacher who has relevant industry experience, an Art Degree and a post-graduate Teaching Diploma. Your teacher will encourage and support you to achieve agreed personal targets throughout the course.

What Next?

You will leave the course with a Level 4 Diploma and a full creative business plan ready for implementation. There is also the opportunity to progress to the second year of a degree programme and if required, the college will be able to help you with your UCAS application. The transferable business skills provided by the course are also suitable for progression to a career in arts management and funding work.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
