Overview

The Foundation Diploma is studied over one year and is a rigorous and exciting course designed to develop all your Art and Design skills across a wide range of disciplines.
Students are required to successfully complete nine units which are assessed throughout the programme and then subject to External Moderation by Edexcel, the awarding body.
The course is divided into three main stages: Exploratory, Pathway, and Confirmatory.

Course Content - What will I learn?

During the Exploratory stage specialist staff and studio facilities enable you to investigate a range of media and techniques within Ceramics, Textiles, Graphics, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Fashion and 3D.
During the Pathway and Confirmatory stages you can specialise in two subjects of your choice based on your intended HE destination. Fashion is also available as a specialist subject at this point .These stages build on your skills and knowledge and develop work that reflects your specialist interest.

You will also take part in a core programme of Contextual Studies, Tutorial and City & Guilds Life Drawing which runs throughout the whole year. During the Confirmatory stage you are required to devise your own final major project which develops your ability to create an in-depth body of work which culminates in an end of year exhibition.

Am I right for the course?

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop a portfolio of work for application to HE.

You will need four GCSEs at Grade 4/ C or above including Maths and English and a minimum of one A Level or a L3 Extended Diploma.

You must provide evidence of your artistic ability and bring examples of your work to interview.

You will have both formative and summative assessments throughout the programme. Students are provided with verbal and written feedback detailing their progress and development with final unit assessment at Level 4 moderated by external examiner.

City & Guilds Life Drawing

You will be taught across the range of specialist subjects by experienced lecturers who are highly qualified within their individual areas. All of the teachers have worked or are currently working professionally in the world of art and design.

What Next?

Progression from the Foundation Diploma is normally to a Higher Education programme at university. The course has impressive progression success to universities and institutions such as Central St Martins, Goldsmiths, Brighton, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Leeds Metropolitan and Nottingham Trent.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
