Overview

The qualification provides a specialist work related programme of study covering key knowledge and skills required in the sector. The National Foundation Diploma is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and supports progression to the Extended Diploma in the second year, or an apprenticeship. The full two years of study is broadly equivalent to 3 A levels in preparation for employment in the construction industry and progression onto the HNC in Construction or Civil Engineering. The qualification offers an engaging programme for all students over 16 who wish to embark on a career in the construction industry.

Units studied on the National Foundation Diploma in year one are:

1 Construction Principles (Exam)
2 Construction Design (Externally assessed synoptic assessment)
4 Construction Technology
5 Health and Safety in Construction
7 Graphical Detailing in Construction
8 Building Regulations and Control in Construction
10 Building Surveying in Construction

Units studied on the Extended Diploma in year two include:

3 Tendering and Estimating (Externally assessed synoptic assessment)
9 Management of a Construction Project
23 Construction in Civil Engineering
39 Housing Design Project
40 Offsite and Onsite Alternative Construction Methods

What Next?

On completion of the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma you would normally continue for a second year onto the L3 Extended Diploma. Completion of these qualifications over two years is broadly equivalent to 3 A Levels and will allow progress onto our HNC in Construction or Civil Engineering or you may wish to further your career development within the industry.

Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Construction can lead to progression on to the HNC in Construction or other Higher Education courses or alternatively into employment within the construction and property industry.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
