Overview

The Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media course is constructed to enable you to achieve 37 credits across the range of units of work and subjects necessary for achieving the level 1 diploma. The units will cover a broad programme of subjects: print, textiles, graphics, painting, drawing, 2D, 3D and Functional Skills.

Course Content - What will I learn?

The Level 1 is considered to be an introduction to many art specialisms and as such, will cover a range of art based subjects. Within each of these disciplines you will learn how to use numerous materials, techniques and processes, how to follow health and safety guidelines and you will be able to document the progression of your ideas and thinking processes in your sketchbooks. You will automatically have the opportunity to apply and progress onto the next level (2) of Art and Design at Oaklands College at the end of the year.

Am I right for the course?

You should enjoy learning about art and design, working with materials to make your own art, exploring with clay, paint, textiles and inks. You will print, paint, construct, design and draw producing work on a variety of scales. You will learn to record your work by illustrating and writing ideas in your sketchbooks. Computer based studies will enable you to produce visual records of your work and you will gain a working knowledge of Photoshop software and image manipulation. If you are passionate about art, want to explore art and design from a 2D and 3D perspective and build on your experience to move on to a level 2 programme, then this is the course for you.

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3 – 1 or successful completion of an Entry Level programme.

There are no written exams on this course. Formative assessments are carried out on a continuous basis, internally by your tutors and you will be awarded your level of achievement for completed units of the work at designated times throughout the year. Marks are checked through internal inspection and external verification procedures, also at set points during the year.

Additionalties will be built in as appropriate to your programme of learning. Learners undergo Functional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy and are thoroughly supported to improve these areas of their learning both on an individual basis and also by having Functional Skills embedded into classroom based tasks. You will also undertake personal development skills to allow you to build and devlelop skills to help you in everyday life and the workplace.

What Next?

With further training or study, students could progress to careers such as advertising, marketing, graphic design, fabric or textile design, photography, interior design, animation. In fact this course could be the beginning of any Art or Design based career. A Level 1 Diploma in Art and Design provides a good grounding to go onto an advanced course such as Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design which in turn can progress into a Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design, Graphic Design, Fashion, Fashion and Textiles or Interactive Media.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
