Overview

This new course is aimed at Adults (19+) who are new to Ceramics. The course will run on Fridays (09.30 – 15.00) over 25 weeks (term time only) starting 29th September 2023 and ending 7th June 2024.

Your tutor will provide you with supportive and encouraging feedback throughout the course. You will keep a record of your own progress and achievements by, for example, photographing your outcomes and reflecting on what you have learnt.

This course is part-funded and the total fee for the year is £360 for adults aged 24+. The course is free for those aged 24+ who are unemployed and on benefit or for those in employment on a low income. Students aged 19-23 should check with Admissions re Fee remission.

Course Content - What will I learn?

In this interesting course for beginners, you will learn a wide range of hand-building pottery processes, such as pinching, coiling and slab, and use a number of decorative finishes including slips, oxides and glazes. You will also have the opportunity to throw on the wheel and use specialist materials such as Paper Clay. All processes will be demonstrated and you will be guided and supported throughout the course by your tutor.

You will be introduced to the work of contemporary ceramicists to inspire and inform your own creative ideas and enable you to create a body of work during a number of Personal Development Days. If you wish, you will also be given the opportunity to participate in a Group Exhibition of your work to display your most successful outcome(s).

Am I right for the course?

If you like the idea of spending one day a week working with clay, you will enjoy the range of opportunities to develop your skills in this new beginners’ course. You will be exploring a range of ceramics techniques with full support from your tutor. In the course, we will look at the work of contemporary ceramicists to inform your ideas.

No previous experience of ceramics required. The course will be aimed at adults who are complete beginners.

Continuous Classroom assessment will take place based on Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement. Your tutor will observe your progress during the course and provide you with supportive and encouraging feedback. You will be expected to keep a record of your own progress and achievements by, for example, photographing your outcomes and reflecting on what you have learnt. Your tutor will support and guide you through this.

All materials and equipment necessary for the course will be provided. There will be a materials fee should you wish to produce large ceramic pieces.
Course Dates: 29/09/23 – 08/12/23 (Two-week half term: 27/10/23 & 3/11/23)
12/01/24 – 22/3/24 (Two-week half term: 16/2/24 & 23/2/24)
19/04/24 – 7/6/24 (One-week half term: 31/5/24)

You will be taught by a skilled teacher who has a relevant Arts Degree and a post-graduate Teaching Diploma. Your teacher will encourage and support you to enjoy and achieve throughout the course.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
