Overview
This qualification provides a flexible introduction to the horticultural industry that can be achieved unit by unit. This programme includes the following units: Safe & Effective Working Practices, Develop Performance, and contribute to the Propagation, Establishment and Maintenance of Plants and Lawns and to assist with Maintenance of Structures & Surfaces. At the end of the course you will achieve a level 1 Diploma.
As this course is part of the foundation learning tier you will be required to complete functional skills in maths and/or English at a level suitable to your ability. You will also be required to complete a Personal Development skills qualification.
Course Content - What will I learn?
The course is highly practical in nature and its purpose is to provide centre-based provision designed to act as a starting point for people who may want to progress into further education and/or employment in the horticultural sector (i.e. gardener, landscaper, nursery worker, groundsman, golf greenkeeper etc)
You will learn about health and safety in the workplace and general horticulture aspects such as plant establishment and maintenance, Plant identification and propagation, lawn care, care of shrubs and trees and the use and care of tools used in the industry.
Am I right for the course?
This course is specifically designed for learners who are new to Horticulture. It covers a wide range of practical tasks that will enable you to feel confident about working within the industry, whether in a garden centre or working for a garden maintenance company. If you enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in gardening, then this could be the course for you.
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3 – 1 or successful completion of an Entry Level programme.
Throughout the year learners will need to demonstrate their competence and understanding of horticulture; this will be assessed through practical assessments and short written tests. In addition candidates will need to pass an online multiple choice test in Health and Safety.
In addition to your main course, you will study for Functional Skills in either English and or Maths and a Personal Skills Development Award
The teachers on this course are well qualified in a range of horticultural specialities, landscape and garden design as well as having many years of practical experience in the landscape and horticultural industries.
What Next?
Students obtaining the full qualification may progress on to a Level 2 programme in Horticulture.
For those of you wanting to go into employment, the aim of our Horticulture and Greenkeeping course(s) are to produce competent carers working within this creative field, with the potential to take up management positions after further experience.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
