Overview
This qualification has been designed for those working as or seeking to become trainee assistant practitioners and, ultimately, assistant practitioners in healthcare.
Assistant practitioners work in diverse healthcare environments, including the NHS and independent sector, e.g. primary, secondary and tertiary care, diagnosis, therapeutic inpatient and outpatient departments, theatres, GP practices, community settings, rehabilitation services.
They support a wide range of practitioners, including registered nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, diagnostic radiographers, physiotherapists, general practitioners, doctors of medicine, surgeons. This is not an exhaustive list.
Course Content - What will I learn?
The HND in Health ProfessionsÂ’ Support has been designed to enable students to undertake a qualification that is completely relevant to the service users they care for, the professions they support and their employers. It was developed in conjunction with NHS and independent sector employers, and education providers who are currently using HNDs to educate and train their workforce.
They support a wide range of practitioners eg; registered nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, diagnostic radiographers, physiotherapists, general practitioners, Doctor of Medicine, Surgeons and more.
As a level 5 qualification it meets Health Education England’s assistant practitioner framework requirements.
In the first year you will complete the following:
Law, Policy and Ethical Practice (15 Credits)
Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practices (30 Credits)
Supporting the Individual Journey through Integrated Health and Social Care (15 Credits)
Fundamentals of Evidence-Based Practice (15 Credits)
Principles of Health Education (15 Credits)
Effective Healthcare Practice using Maths (15 Credits)
Applied Anatomy and Physiology (15 Credits)
In the second year you will study the following:
Innovation and Improvement through Participatory Action Research (30 Credits)
Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice (15 Credits)
Planning Care in Practice (15 Credits)
Meeting the Needs of Individuals with Long-term Health Conditions (15 Credits)
Team and Individual Leadership: Mentoring and Coaching Others (15 Credits)
End of Life Care Planning and Support (15 Credits)
Optional units
Nursing – Principles and Fundamentals of Practice (15 Credits)
OR
Supporting Team and Partnership Working across Health and Social Care Services (15 Credits)
Am I right for the course?
The course is beneficial if you are looking to further your career within the industry, update your knowledge and develop your academic and professional skills.
To be considered for admission into the program, applicants should meet the following criteria:
1. Educational Qualifications:
– Possess an A Level 3 qualification in a subject related to the industry.
– Alternatively, have completed two A levels in science or technology subjects.
2. GCSE Passes:
– Possess GCSE passes in English and Maths, specifically on the Higher paper.
3. Employment Requirement:
– Normally, applicants should be engaged in appropriate employment at the time of application.
– Alternatively, applicants should have been employed in a relevant role within the last two years.
4. Mature applicants without formal qualifications, but with evidence of sufficient, relevant industrial experience will be considered. You will also be required to attend an interview with the Course Leader.

Candidates are assessed by a variety of methods, including case studies, assignments, presentations and work based projects.
You will be provided with details of the assignment requirements for each Unit. Students will be encouraged to engage with personal and professional development, gaining formative feedback on progress towards Unit outcomes, and developing knowledge and competence in the discipline.
Summative assessment is mainly through coursework. Students will evidence their progress through written academic essays and reports, or practical activities, which will vary according to each individual Unit assessment requirements. Each Unit will carry more than one assessment task in order to meet the learning outcomes and criteria for the Unit as a whole. There are no summative written exams for this course, however in some Units, your knowledge may be formatively assessed through in class tests.

What Next?
On successful completion of this course, students may progress onto studies at Level 6 . It is possible to gain entrance to the second year, of a three year degree or continue onto a HND Students may also move into higher roles or positions within their organisation, or wish to develop their career further by moving into other employment.
In accordance with The Institute of Apprenticeships the Occupational Map https://occupational-maps.instituteforapprenticeships.org/maps/progression-map/OCC0215 shows some of the strongest progression links between the focused occupation of a Healthcare Assistant Practitioner and other occupations. Progression decisions have been reached by comparing the knowledge and skills statements between occupational standards, combined with individualised learner movement data against the following:
Midwifery
Occupational Therapist
Operating Department Practitioner
Paramedic
Nurse
It is anticipated that individuals would be required to undertake further learning or training to progress to and from occupations. This qualification may well lead to other progression routes in Healthcare and Allied Health Professional roles.
On completion of the Applied Science course you will have the ability to apply to university to further develop your skills in this fascinating subject. You will receive support for applications to university or work with training to pursue your career in the range of jobs associated with Forensic Investigation.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
