Level 1 Award in Home Cooking Skills – Sweet & Savoury Pastries

Overview

On this short course you will learn to make a range of pastry products every week covering the history and science behind them. Each week a cold plated dessert will also be made.

Learners will make 2-3 pastry products and 1 dessert a week. Over the 6 weeks learners will make basic pastry products using a wide range of skills, types of pastry and ingredients. Learners will make fillings for their pastries from scratch and make a dessert from the pastry or separate.

Ice cream will be demonstrated to learners and a small tub will be available to take home.

Short and Sweet Pastry (Tarts-Flans)
Puff pastry (from Scratch) (Mille Feuille)
Choux Pastry (Eclairs)
Strudel Paste
Suet Pastry (Demonstration)
Hot water Paste (Pork Pies)

Am I right for the course?

You should have a genuine interest in cooking and want to develop your skills in this area. You need to be aged 19+.

There are no formal entry requirements but you must be aged 19 or over.

You will be assessed through observation of your skills.

What Next?

This course could lead you to enter self-employment with pastry making skills. It could also support your progression to further education or training.

Successful completion of our Hospitality & Catering courses can lead you onto a higher level course, university or even into employment.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.

Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.

All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
