Horticulture is an exceptionally diverse industry with careers from landscape gardening and construction, to arboriculture, design, and architecture. It is an evolving area for employment with exciting new technology, where there is a huge demand for qualified people to join the workforce. At Oaklands College, you can become a part of this by learning how to create a new garden, green walls and roofs, new techniques in tree planting and plant production. Oaklands has been a horticultural college for sixty years and we have fantastic grounds for students to work and practice their developing skills.
If you are thinking of running your own business, come to our Landscape Construction Department where you can learn to lay patios and carry out garden maintenance or fencing. Our staff are highly qualified, have an excellent knowledge of the industry, and are currently working with the students to regenerate the grounds. To further support employability, we also run an operational nursery onsite where we sell to the public and take part in garden shows.
We run educational trips to different to horticultural venues where you will see examples of up to date industry practices. We have excellent links to local businesses, which supports us to ensure our students have current vocational knowledge and relevant experience when obtaining employment. Horticulture is a rewarding and exciting career, and at Oaklands College, you can gain nationally and internationally recognised qualifications. These qualifications can lead to employment within the industry or alternatively progression to university where you can pursue higher-level career options.
Our Landscape Construction courses include Horticulture and Gardening are designed for amateur gardeners to seasoned horticulturalists, so whether you want to indulge a hobby or get serious and carve out a career, we can help you to succeed.
Oaklands has been involved in horticultural training for over 60 years. The campus is set in mature, landscaped gardens with a large range of plant specimens and has a good range if facilities to deliver its courses.
We offer courses from Entry Level 2 through to Level 3 where you will learn, how to prepare a garden plot, plant propagation, tree and shrub planting, pruning, plant identification, soil cultivation, garden design and turf establishments.
We currently have a number of exciting horticulture projects underway. We have recently added a new 20-metre glasshouse and we are developing a plant nursery where all plants will be sown and grown by students. We are also redesigning and replanting existing beds and borders around the college grounds.
All of our full time programmes include opportunities to support and enhance your learning so that you can achieve your goals and ambitions. Students enrol on a Study Programme which individualises their education whilst enhancing their employability skills. A Study programme is made up of four key elements which includes a main vocational qualification, the development of English and maths through the study of GCSE’s or Functional Skills, Work-related learning through work experience and Personal Development Reviews.
