If you have a passion for working with cars and engines, this is the perfect course for you. Based at our St Albans Campus, you will learn the hands-on skills you need to work in this industry.

You will be taught by our highly trained team of tutors who have expert knowledge of the industry, as well as first-hand experience. You will learn how to work on cars safely in our modern industry standard workshops. You will get a feel for what it is really like to work in the industry, and you will be trusted to carry out work on cars belonging to College staff.

You will get the chance to learn practical skills, from putting an engine together to building an entire care from scratch.

Having a motor vehicle qualification will allow you to enter employment or continue your studies on a specialist course or Higher Education.

All of our full time programmes include opportunities to support and enhance your learning so that you can achieve your goals and ambitions. Students enrol on a Study Programme which individualises their education whilst enhancing their employability skills. A Study programme is made up of four key elements which includes a main vocational qualification, the development of English and maths through the study of GCSE’s or Functional Skills, Work-related learning through work experience and Personal Development Reviews.

City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance

The course will cover the 12 units with 6 online examinations which includes practical tasks including: • Maintenance within a workshop • Remove test and refit a cylinder head • Remove test and refit a coolant thermistor • To remove/test, ignition coils and sparking plugs • To remove an alternator/stator, test the systems and test a battery • To test/remove lamp clusters • To test steering and remove/refit a steering rack • To test a suspension strut, remove and refit • To maintain brakes: diagnose faults, remove, measure and refit • To understand the drive and transmission components You will also study Maths and English as part of your programme at the appropriate level for you.

This course is designed to allow you to specialise in the area of fault rectification and diagnosis on modern vehicles. You will build on the practical skills and knowledge you have learnt from a Level 2 motor vehicle qualification and will be well prepared for moving into the motor vehicle industry as a full-time technician. This diploma qualification is the technical certificate element of a modern motor vehicle apprenticeship so if you could find work in a garage on completion of the course, you would only need to complete the workplace observations and possibly functional skills. The level 3 qualification consists of the following units: • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline faults • Diagnosing and rectifying vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
