Access to Higher Education - Access to HE - Health and Social Care/Social Work

The Access to HE course is a nationally recognised qualification by the Higher Education Sector and is awarded through the Gateway awarding body. Over the course of the year you will achieve skills at level 2 in Maths and a range of units at Level 3. Alongside the vocational subjects, you will also cover study skills, ICT and units in science based subjects including biology and chemistry, as well as psychology. You will also attend tutorials where you will have the opportunity to gain further accreditation in examination skills and portfolio building. Your tutor will support and guide you in applying to university through UCAS.

What are the Course Requirements?

At least a one year break from education and initial assessment results at Level 2 in English and Maths. In addition an interview with an Access to HE tutor will be required. You must have a GCSE Grade C in English or Maths at entry. You must also be willing to undertake the other as part of the programme as most Universities require grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English for admission.

Am I right for the course?

The Access to HE Health & Social Care/Social Work course is designed for those whose primary aim is to progress to university and study for a Health and Social Care or Social Work subject related degree. The course is offered as a one year full time programme.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of graded assignments at the end of every unit. You will also be required to undertake some assessments in an examination setting. The credits are tracked and accumulate towards the building of a portfolio.

Course Additionality

It is recommended that you engage in at least 20 hours of work experience in your chosen field during the year to support your application to university. If you do not hold a GCSE at grade C or above in mathematics or English you will be required to take this in addition to your course.

What Next

The course is very popular and an early application is advisable in order to avoid disappointment. You will be required to attend an interview and participate in initial assessments and task.

Our Access courses will prepare you for entry to university. A particular feature of our courses is the development of successful learning skills and the ability to work independently.

Our tutors work hard to challenge students and offer individual support tailored to help prepare them for university. You will be taught be a team of highly qualified lecturers that possess a wide range of knowledge and experience to help you to develop in your chosen Access pathway.

On completing the Access course many of our students will continue their education at the University of Hertfordshire. Others choose to go further afield and continue their studies at various universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
