Apprenticeships - L2 Apprenticeship in Amenity Horticulture

The duration of your apprenticeship will depend on your previous workplace experience and skill level. The Work Based Diploma Level 2 part of the apprenticeship framework will be delivered online using Oaklearn the college's online learning platform. All apprentices must be on programme for at least 366 days. You can start the course at any time you wish.

What are the Course Requirements?

Apprentices must be employed in the sports turf industry. Apprentices must complete an initial assessment before a place on the training course is offered. Your employer must be prepared to take a full and active role in supporting you in the apprenticeship framework requirements.

Am I right for the course?

You will be working in the sports turf industry as a Greenkeeper or Groundsperson. You will be able to build up a portfolio of evidence and take part in work based assessment visits. In addition you will be expected to gain 2 Functional Skills (level 1 in maths and English). Therefore you should have a reasonable level of education in Maths and English or be able to demonstrate you can work to the required levels.

Course Content - What will I learn?

The topics the diploma part of the course will cover include -health and safety, use and maintenance of equipment and machines, operating a tractor and attachments, establishing plants outdoors, presenting, maintaining and repairing sports surfaces, developing personal performance, maintaining the health of sports turf. You will cover Functional Skills at level 1 in Maths and English (unless you have already gained suitable GCSE levels that serve as a relaxation or already hold Functional skills in maths and English at level 1).

How will I be assessed?

Success in the programme will be based on practical competence in the workplace and underpinning knowledge. Students must complete a portfolio of evidence to support their competence. The Functional skills part of the course will be assessed in college with a Functional skills exam.

What Next

Apprentices who achieve the framework (and are now assuming some responsibility for the way work is organised) may progress on to a Level 3 ER funded Workbased diploma or an Advanced apprenticeship, which includes the workbased Diploma Level 3, aimed at supervisory management levels

Most of your training is carried out at your place of work through an Individual Learning Plan. This is designed to provide you with the support, supervision and work-based mentoring you will need.

An assessor will work alongside you and your employer to monitor your progress against nationally recognised qualifications within your vocational area. This ensures that while your needs – and those of your employer – are being met at a local level, the qualifications you gain meet the highest national standards.

Assessors also visit you at your workplace to see how you are putting your developing skills into practice on the job.

Classes will be taught by experienced professionals who will ensure you develop your technical knowledge and key skills.
