Access to Higher Education - Access to HE - Midwifery

The Access to HE course is a nationally recognised qualification by the Higher Education Sector and is awarded through the Gateway. Over the course of the year, you will achieve skills at level 2 in Maths and a range of units at Level 3. You will develop your study skills, ICT and study units in Science based subjects; Chemistry and Biology, as well the Social Sciences of Psychology and vocational units. At the end of the year you will undertake a research project. You will also attend tutorials where you will have the opportunity to gain further accreditation in examination skills and portfolio building. Your tutor will assist you in applying to university through UCAS.

What are the Course Requirements?

At least a one year break from education and initial assessments results at Level 2 in English and Maths. In addition an interview with an Access to HE tutor will be required. You must also have a GCSE Grade C in English or Mathematics at entry and be willing to undertake the other alongside your programme.

Am I right for the course?

The Access to Midwifery course is designed for those whose primary aim is to progress to university and study Midwifery. The course is offered as a one year full time programme.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of graded assignments at the end of every unit. You will also be required to undertake some assessments in an examination setting. The credits are tracked and accumulate towards the building of a portfolio.

Course Additionality

It is recommended that you partake in 20 hours of work experience alongside the course to support your university application. You will be required to complete a GCSE in maths or English if you do not hold one of these at entry to the programme.

What Next

The course is very popular and an early application is advisable in order to avoid disappointment. As part of the interview process you will be required to undertake an initial assessment and also an interview task.

Our Access courses will prepare you for entry to university. A particular feature of our courses is the development of successful learning skills and the ability to work independently.

Our tutors work hard to challenge students and offer individual support tailored to help prepare them for university. You will be taught be a team of highly qualified lecturers that possess a wide range of knowledge and experience to help you to develop in your chosen Access pathway.

On completing the Access course many of our students will continue their education at the University of Hertfordshire. Others choose to go further afield and continue their studies at various universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
