Access to Higher Education - Access to HE - Science

The Access to HE course is a nationally recognised qualification by the Higher Education Sector and is awarded through the Gateway. Over the course of the year, you will achieve skills at level 2 and level 3 in Maths and a range of units at Level 3. You will also cover Study skills, ICT and units in Science based subjects; Physics, Chemistry and Biology. At the end of the year you will undertake a research project. You will also attend tutorials where you will have the opportunity to gain further accreditation in examination skills and portfolio building. Your tutor will assist you in applying to university through UCAS.

What are the Course Requirements?

At least a one year break from education and initial assessments results at Level 2 in English and Maths. In addition an interview with an Access to HE tutor will be required. Please note that Universities require grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English for admission.

Am I right for the course?

The Access to Science course is designed for those whose primary aim is to progress to university to study a science related degree. The course is offered as a one year full time programme.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of graded assignments at the end of every unit. You will also be required to undertake some assessments in an examination setting. The credits are tracked and accumulate towards the building of a portfolio. The Access to HE Diploma is awarded through assessment of the portfolio based on the minimum achievement of 45 x Level 3 credits and 15 x Level 2 credits.

Course Additionality

It is recommended that you engage in at least 20 hours of work experience in your chosen field during the year to support your application to university. It is advisable that if you do not possess a GCSE in Maths or English at Grade C that you take advantage of the opportunity to study these subjects at college.

Our Access courses will prepare you for entry to university. A particular feature of our courses is the development of successful learning skills and the ability to work independently.

Our tutors work hard to challenge students and offer individual support tailored to help prepare them for university. You will be taught be a team of highly qualified lecturers that possess a wide range of knowledge and experience to help you to develop in your chosen Access pathway.

On completing the Access course many of our students will continue their education at the University of Hertfordshire. Others choose to go further afield and continue their studies at various universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
