Encompassing a whole spectrum of art and design methods, the HND involves the pursuit of visual languages and imagery that hold particular meaning and significance to the artist/ designer. You will also gain the knowledge and and skills to embark on a career in the creative, design and cultural industries, opportunities for work-based learning and experience in design, creative arts and cultural industries, an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification in two years of full-time study and a progression route to the final year of appropriate honours degree programmes.

About the course

The Art, Fashion & Design Department offers a well-equipped and professionally staffed environment where students can reach their potential, whatever their ability.

We also work with local companies and community institutions, taking on real life projects alongside brief-based learning in lessons.

Our tutors have many years experience working in the world of art, fashion and design. Many of them still work commercially within the industry and designers and exhibiting artists.

Important information

What are the Course Requirements?

48 UCAS points, including one GCE A level or equivalent. GCSE English Language and Maths with 4 points or at Grade D or above and a portfolio of work showing your interest and potential ability. Candidates will also be required to attend an interview prior to acceptance on the course.

Prior experience studying either Art and Design related subject is desirable yet students with alternative or vocationally relevant Art and Design experience are welcome to apply. In all cases, applicants will be asked to attend an interview to assess their suitability.

This programme is designed to provide highly relevant, specialised studies utilising industry standard equipment and vocational expertise that will prepare you for a range of potential careers within the Art and Design field. Year 1 (HNC) Visual Communcation in Art and Design, Ideas generation and development in Art and Design, Drawign techniques and processes, Ideas in contect, Cultural referencing in Art and Design, Visual and Personl Presention, Managing a creative Business, Professional Practice in Art and Design. Year 2 (HND) Project design implementation and evaluation, Personal development through drawing, Communication with images in Art and Design, Research Project, References and sources in Art and Design, Work-based experience.

A variety of assessment methods will be used within the course, these may include; practical project assessment, presentations, reports and exhibited work.

Life drawing will be part of the course. Additional costs: You will have the opportunity to participate in optional day trips including gallery and museum visits, talks and other art events (cost: £30-£60) and an annual overseas trip (cost £300-£500). Art and Design materials are not included within the course fees and typical costs are given below: Pencils. A range from the B selection as these allow a greater range of marks and tone - £5 Rubbers. A hard plastic eraser and a putty rubber - £2 Black Indian ink - £3 Acrylics. A good starter range is: Burnt Umber; Cobalt Blue; Alizarin Crimson; Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red and White. Opt for student quality such as Daler Rowney, System 3 or Galeria - £10 A range of different sized brushes - £5 A scalpel or a craft knife - £4 A box of willow charcoal - £3 Compressed charcoal - £2 Graphite sticks -£2 Masking tape- £2 Bulldog clips/ drawing board clips £3 + Pritt stick - £1 A1 Portfolio £40 + A3 sketchbooks - £7 each A4 folder- £5

The HND is a standalone qualification which will prepare you for a broad range of roles in the creative industries. The HND is equivalent to two years of a degree and a recognised academic qualification in its own right. You could also progress to an appropriate Honours degree final year at another institution.

Fees

  • 16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
  • For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
  • Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
