English as second or foreign language (ESOL)

Our English as a second or foreign language courses here at Oaklands will enable you to develop your English language skills for the future.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL)



Our English as a Foreign Language courses are for: au pairs, international students, students who need to take an internationally recognised exam such as Cambridge First Certificate, Cambridge Advanced Certificate, IELTS, or students who want to improve their English in general for work or leisure. Courses are available from Pre-intermediate to Advanced. Students who want to study full time must have a level of English at B2 (Upper Intermediate) or C1 (Advanced). There are no fee concessions.

Our courses include:

  • 6 hours (General English; Intermediate; Upper Intermediate and Advanced)
  • 2 hours (Business English; IELTS)
You can also combine these classes with our ESOL classes. These are not accredited by the British Council.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) 16-18s



The ESOL 16-18 programme prepares students for the following qualifications:

  • A Certificate or Award in Employability and Personal Development
  • ESOL Skills for Life Speaking and Listening
  • ESOL Skills for Life Reading and Writing
  • Functional Skills Maths
  • Functional Skills English
  • Vocational tasters e.g. Hospitality, Art and Design

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Adults

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages courses are for: people who live and work in the UK and need to improve their English to communicate at home, in the community, at school, at work. Courses are available from Entry 1 to Level 2. Fee concessions are available for people who are unemployed and on a recognised benefit. Please talk to our student advisors about this.

A typical course will include:

  • An Award in Employability and Personal Development
  • ESOL Skills for Life Speaking and Listening
  • ESOL Skills for Life Reading and Writing
  • Literacy units if you are not ready to take the ESOL Skills for Life Reading and Writing

The qualification you take will depend on your assessment at the beginning of the course and the progress you make.

Citizenship
If you are studying to obtain Citizenship, you must take the exam at a registered centre. Please look at the Home Office website for a list of centres. Oaklands is not a registered centre. However, we can help you to improve your English to pass your exam.
