AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Ex Oaklands College Students Nick Tompkins, Nathan Earle & Hayden Stringer are all starring in the U20s Junior World Cup, which is currently being held in New Zealand.

All three students, who are now signed with Saracens, have travelled with the England team to try to reclaim the trophy after the previous cohort were successful in 2013.

In the pool stages they dispatched Italy 63-3, Australia 38-24 and Argentina 17-16, with Earle in blistering form scoring five tries. Their semi-final vs Ireland saw the team storm out of the blocks scoring 4 tries in the first half, before running out comfortable winners 45-15.

The play-off win sees them matched with a powerful and well balanced South Africa side who saw off New Zealand in their semi-final.

All three Oaklands graduates will be hoping to retain their places in the match day squad for what is likely to be the biggest sporting occasion of their lives so far.

Dave Hesketh, Oaklands Director of Rugby, is particularly pleased with the team’s achievements and commented: “To see these lads performing so well on the world stage is a fantastic advert for the college programme and the AASE programme as a whole.

“Many of the U20s squad have attended AASE colleges where they have been able to develop as players and achieve their potential as professional athletes. During their time here, the three lads worked exceptionally hard to get where they are, and they have really kicked on again this season.

“We are all rooting for all the boys, and the England team as a whole – they are certainly doing their country proud, but we are unbelievably proud of them too.”
