Former Oaklands student brings home silver in IAAF World Championships

LONDON — A former Oaklands College student made international headlines over the weekend after being part of the relay team that bagged Great Britain a Silver medal at the debut IAAF World Championships in London.

All eyes were on 21-year-old Daryll Neita as she brought it home for Great Britain on the final leg of the 4x 100m relay securing the teams silver medal win, one of six team GB medals by the close of the games on Sunday.

The quartet of Asha Philip, Desiree Henry, Dina Asher-Smith and Neita came in with a time of 42.12 seconds in the final, coming second to the United States but ahead of Jamaica in third.  They were roared home by a packed home crowd at the Queens Park Olympic Stadium, home to the Olympic Games in London 2012.

The latest win builds of the success from the Rio Olympics, which saw the team come away with Bronze behind United Sates and Jamaica – making the shift in this year’s result even sweeter as their highest international medal to date.

Head of Oaklands Wolves Athletics Academy Ryan Freckleton said: “We support and encourage all our athletes to be the best of their technical ability and to seize every opportunity and it’s amazing to see Daryll achieve at an international level.

“It is especially rewarding to have seen first-hand her development and followed her journey as she has gone onto such high profile success following her time with Oaklands Wolves.”
