The Agriculture team at Oaklands College are celebrating a successful weekend at Herts County Show, taking home a sweep of rosettes in livestock competitions.

The team of students and staff took their best livestock from the college farm at St Albans Campus to the show to compete against industry professionals in chosen categories.

The big win of the weekend was homebred heifer Hartoak ‘Ellie’ who after coming top in her class of eight junior females went on to win Female and Overall champion of the section.

The team picked up multiple wins over at the at Sheep Marquee, coming both first with Suffolk  ewe and ram lambs and champion with the ewe lamb.  Wins in the long wool class came with the Teeswater sheep coming first and taking the title of champion.

The Level 2 and 3 Agriculture students take a very hands role at the event, from being involved in all the preparation of the animals to staying on site at the showground all weekend to care for their welfare throughout. For many, the Herts Show along with two other county shows visited by the team this year is one of their first experiences of showing livestock in a public arena.

Oaklands Farm Manager Del Knowles said: “We were thrilled with so many wins at this event – it’s a reflection of just how hard our students work to prepare the sheep and cattle to look their best.

“To see them handling in competitions with such professionalism and expertise and coming up top in so many classes at the show made all the hard work worthwhile. They did an excellent job representing the College.”
