Oaklands Athletics are paving the way for a summer of success after a string of medals and personal bests competing in competitions around the world.

This month students training in the Athletics arm of elite sporting academy Oaklands Wolves flew the flag for the college in the London Para World Championships, Commonwealth Youth Championships in Brazil and the European Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy.

Here in London, Maria Lyle, who has just come to the end of a BTEC in Sport, returned from the competition with two world championship bronze medals, one for the T35 100m final.

Sprinters Chad Miller and Vera Chinedu, both Business students, received personal accolades in the Bahamas, with Chad securing title as third fastest 200m athlete in the Commonwealth and Vera placed fifth in the 100m final at the Commonwealth Youth Championships. Both athletes then competed in the 4x200m mixed relay where they contributed to a fantastic silver medal win.

A Team Oaklands trio finally represented at the European Junior Championships, with Electrical student Nick Stewart placed fourth in the 200m semi-final, and BTEC Sport student Rechimal Miller competing despite recent injury and fellow classmate Dom Ashwell placed fifth in his semi-final run.

Ryan Freckleton, Head of the Athletics Academy at Oaklands College, said, “To step up and compete amongst the best in the world is an incredible opportunity and our students delivered professional high quality performances at each of these competitions this summer.

“With former Oaklands academy students making incredible wins such as Oliva Breen with her Gold in Long Jump, not only can our current students compete but it gives them unbeatable experience and a taste of what they can achieve in their future careers. “
