On 15 October, Oaklands College Citizenship A Level students took part in a European Parliament Youth event, to learn all about EU politics and the role of parliament.

The day was a resounding success and 120 students from all over the region attended. Debates on key issues such as migration were held and learners fed back their discussions in the form of questions to be debated by Members of the European Parliament.

Oaklands College student Rachel Wan came 2nd in the competition to design a way to encourage students to be more understanding of the European Parliament and it’s roles, with the idea of encouraging a club session in all schools and colleges focussed on stimulating students interests.

Hans Svennevig, Lecturer in Sociology and co-ordinator for A Level Politics and Citizenship, commented: “The day was a great success for everyone involved and was very enjoyable – including the free lunch! Our students did very well and it was inspirational to see such good ambassadors for Oaklands College.”
