Mayor opens art exhibition

Water exhibition sponsored by Affinity Water is a success

22 April 2013

On International World Water Day the Mayor along with local Councillors and art enthusiasts were invited to the opening of Oaklands College’s art exhibition, “Water” at St Albans Town Hall, sponsored by Affinity Water.

The opening attracted over 100 visitors who were able to place bids on their favourite pieces of artwork, with all proceeds from the sale being equally divided between the Mayor’s Charities Centre 33, Special Olympics and Water Aid.

All artwork was judged on the evening by the Mayor Eileen Harris, Principal of the College Zoe Hancock, Councillor Melvyn Teare, Director of Art, Fashion & Design Amanda Towers and representative from Affinity Water, Stakeholder Engagement Manager Elizabeth Allen, who collectively selected a first, second and third place.

Free to enter and open to the public until 27 March, the exhibition showcased an array of original artwork including fashion, ceramics, paintings, graphics and 3D artworks.

Zoe Hancock, Principal of Oaklands College, commented: “It was great to see so much thought provoking and yet beautiful pieces of art in one room. The art was very well received and many bids were placed throughout the evening.

“I would like to thank both Mayor Eileen Harris for attending and helping us do the very difficult job of judging the artwork and Affinity Water who sponsored the evening and helped fund first, second and third prizes.”

Amanda Towers, Director of Art, Fashion & Design, commented: “The students have worked extremely hard to create work in a wide range of mediums, that evoke a variety of emotions that surround the topic of water.  I would like to congratulate the winners Amelia Dunn, Ionna Loaies and Anton Chivers .”
