Mechanics of the future build car from scratch

Budding mechanics from the College’s Motor Vehicle Department have been getting to grips with building their very own kit car.

The students got the chance to strip down a donated Mazda MX-5 and refurbish the parts to use in the Westfield kit car.

Co-ordinator for the Department Simon Darley said: “We wanted to do something different this year with the students that we haven’t done before. We thought it would be a good project as not all colleges have the opportunity to do this.”

The car took around six months to complete and the students had help from local businesses who kindly donated parts for free, including Gold Crest Motors who refurbished the wheels, R-Tec who supplied the induction kit and steering wheel and Bennetts Motor Factors who supplied a number of engine parts.

“The idea was to broaden the student experience and teach them essential skills used in the trade, as well as it being an exciting and motivating project. It’s been a fantastic experience for our students, and they’re already asking what project they can take on next year,” said Simon.
