• Art Fashion and Design End of Year Exhibition

    Our annual Art, Fashion and Design show opens its doors to the public to give everyone in the local community the opportunity to see the latest projects from our creative stars at Oaklands.

    From 25-28th June at St Albans Campus, we have transformed our space at the Discovery Centre to house end of year projects from curriculum areas such as Fashion, Photography, Interactive Media, Art and Design and Graphic Design. You will be able to see pieces created by student from all levels from Level 1 right through to Foundation Degree.  

    For many students, the show is one of if not their first opportunity to display their work publically and it is our pleasure to be able to share these pieces with the local community.

    Our exhibition is FREE to anyone in the public to visit and is open 10am-4pm every day.  Please also note there is no Foundation on Tuesday 27th June. We look forward to welcoming you.

    Oaklands College Music department presents...

    HE MUSIC SHOWCASE

    HNC and HND music students have collaborated together to create an exciting music event, full of various genres of music, including Funk, Rock, Metal, Pop and many more! Students will be showcasing their musical talents through a range of DJ sets, bands and two piece ensembles, providing an evening of music entertainment that has something for everyone. The event is open both to current students and members of the public, with donations from the event on the door going to the chosen charity of Peace Hospice Care. Doors open at 6pm and the event is expected to run through until 9pm.

    Bands performing will include...

    Truck Stop Sandwich:

    A two piece ensemble made up of Lara Vickers (vocals and lead guitar) and Darren Fribbins (drums). Their set list is comprises of 'throw back' rock/metal hits, taking their audience back to their younger years!

    Lazy Eye:

    A dynamic funk band made up of Alisha Fraser-Shanley (lead vocals), David Master (lead guitar), Conor Mulhern (bass) and Peter Harris (drums). Bringing to you a fusion of old and new funky records, Lazy Eye will make you want to sing and dance to their music!

    Simplicity:

    A three piece band comprised of Scott Armstrong (drums), Kim Young (bass) and Sam Tidman (guitar), playing a variety of indie and rock music.

    Conform To Serve:

    Formed in 2015, Conform to Serve are a death metal band from Hertfordshire, England. Their current line up includes Tom Griffiths (vocals and guitar), Tom Emery (guitar), Peter Harris (drums) and Jay Majer (bass). The band will be playing their own songs for the entirety of their set, showcasing their songwriting talents.

  • Fame at the Myriad Theatre

    Dates: 23 – 23 May, 2018

    Dig your legwarmers out and your best singing voice as Oaklands College Level 3 students gear up for a performance of hit musical ‘Fame’ at the Myriad Theatre.

    The 1980s American teen musical drama chronicles the lives and hardships of students attending the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, from their auditions to their freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years.

    Those who make the cut discover that it takes a lot of hard work to become a star and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. The youngsters grapple with heavy issues such as homosexuality, abortion, attempted suicide and illiteracy. On top of their unique struggles, the students must deal with the mundane pressures of adolescence like homework, heartbreak and rejection.

    Enjoy our students spin on this musical classic, which has all the drama and musical hits for a great night’s entertainment.

  • Performing Arts Summer Showcase

    Our Level 2 Performing Arts students are hosting a Summer Showcase - a variety performance with each student stepping up in their chosen discipline to wow the crowds.

    Students have prepared a set solo performance of singing, dancing and acting. For our students this is a great opportunity to take to the stage and performing in front of a live audience in our campus theatre.

    The night is varied, fun and a great opportunity for our students personalities to shine in their performances.

  • Oaklands College Unaffiliated Show Jumping and Dog Show

    Dates: 06 – 06 May, 2018

    Join us this Bank Holiday weekend for our Unaffiliated Show Jumping and Dog Show, a free event for families which takes place at St Albans Campus. 

    See horses and riders make the jump in our show jumping sessions, and watch horse and dog classes led by experts. 

    Also on site the day will be a host of refreshments for visitors, and a lucky dip to win prizes. 

    The event is being organised by Level 3 Equine studies students as part of an Event Management unit in their studies. They’ve worked so hard in pulling the event together they’d love you to join them for a day of animal fun. 

    The event is FREE to attend, donations will be collected on the day of the departments chosen charity of Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony, a charity specialising in raising funds for Bone Cancer Research and ‘Wilberry’s Wishes’ – special equine based experiences for terminally ill people and their families.

  • Print Impression: Student work showcase

    This Spring come and see works form the next generation of artistic talent as Oaklands College hosts ‘Print Impression’ a showcase of illustration and print works created created by Year 2 HND Art and Design students studying at Oaklands College.

    The exhibition will display artwork produced as part of the students final major projects which explore as art discipline of their choice.

    The pieces will be on display in the College’s busy Stables Restaurant, a hub of daily dining for College staff, students and guests and members of the public on the restaurant special Thursday night dining service.

    Students Gemma, Beth, Dom, Steven and Cherie will demonstrate the use of a range of print processes in their work, including relief; intaglio, mono and screen-printing methods.

    The students have created the exhibition as a public display of their works, with all works tagged and priced with further details for purchase.

    The teams will also be hosted a small ‘Pop Up Shop’ on Tuesday 24th April to kick start the exhibition, with small print edition, postcards and other handmade items for sale.

    Members of the public are welcome to visit to view the student pieces and if they chose enjoy lunch at The Stables Restaurant. Please note however, the restaurant is  open for lunchtime services Tuesday - Friday, 12-1.15pm.  Full details of the restaurant opening times and evening services can be found at www.oaklands.ac.uk/thestables.

  • Summer Fair 2018

    ‘Sun's out, Fun's out!’ for our annual Summer Fair event, a great day of FREE family fun hosted at our St Albans Campus this June.

    Back a winner in our Sheep Racing Competitions, enjoy the thrills and spills on the Funfair and soak up the atmosphere with live music and dance displays on stage. With tents a plenty and stalls selling gifts, crafts and homemade goods and lots to fill hungry tums in our Food Court, there’s plenty for all the family for a great day out.

    The event, which has been running for over 10 years, draws thousands from the local community to campus, bringing together the best bits of College Life from our Curriculum teams and wider community groups and charities.

    We take advantage of our expansive green spaces to transform our sports field to host everything from inflatable activity courses, donkey rides, and even hovercrafts for visitors to enjoy. It’s a full College affair and our privilege to be able to welcome you all on campus to enjoy the range of activities we have on offer.

    You can take a selfie in the College kit car, grab a plant for the garden from the Horticulture team, and even task the little ones with building a wall with our bricklaying team. Our Beauty teams are on hand for a quick pamper sesh, and our Equine and Animal Management team welcome guests to meet our animal family up at Oaklands Habitat.

    Entry is FREE, and parking will be available on site.

  • Student Exhibition: The Future in Your Hands

    Oaklands College Art students are excited to exhibit in St Albans Cathedral. This annual exhibition opens its doors to the public to give everyone in the local community the opportunity to see the latest projects from our creative stars at Oaklands.

    The project allows students to take a deep and investigative look at questions being raised by political and social changes happening in the contemporary world from a young adult's point of view.

    The work will be produced from a variety of disciplines such as ceramics, photography, painting and drawing, print, graphics, fashion, textiles and three dimensional design.

    For many students, the show is one of if not their first opportunity to display their work publically and it is our pleasure to be able to share these pieces with the local community.

    The exhibition is FREE and open to the public at St Albans Cathedral, AL1 1BY.

  • World Food Festival 2018

    Dates: 12 – 12 May, 2018

    It’s back! The World Food Festival returns to Welwyn Garden City this year on Saturday 12th May, bringing culinary flavours from all over the world to WGC town centre.

    Oaklands College once again partners with the WGC BID team to host the event, which combines an exciting mix of great worldly cuisine and live music and entertainment.

    Get the latest tips and tricks from culinary experts on the Cooking Demonstrations stage, and enjoy the sights and sounds from local and bands, performers and community groups as you soak up your chosen cuisine in the town centre.

    The festival, now in its’s event year attracts thousands of people to Welwyn Garden City town centre, and is a go- to date in the diary for foodie fans far and wide.

    Oaklands College students from an array of departments use the event to showcase their skills and gain some vital experience in their chosen field. Hospitality and Catering students led by a team of tutors man a food stall in the main hub of the festival whilst Music and Performing Arts students take to the stage to wow the crowds as they enjoy the festival's delights.

    The event is FREE entry for all visitors – bring the family and enjoy all the activities on offer!


  • Oaklands Wolves Basketball Final Try Outs

    Dates: 02 – 02 May, 2018

    Register now for this year's final try outs for the Oaklands Wolves Basketball Academy. Join us for a chance to join one of the best player development centres in the country.

    The trials are open to students who have already applied and attended one of our open days. If you have not applied please contact Head of Basketball at Oaklands, Michael Ball at michael.ball@oaklands.ac.uk

    What to expect?

    The event will start at 1.30pm and end by 5.30pm. During this time you will take part in a physical and skill test for an opportunity to show us how you perform on a basketball court. 

    Once on campus, please report to reception to sign in and then make your way to the basketball court, located in the Discovery Centre building.

    Please bring a training kit and a water bottle with you for the trials.

    After the event students will find out if they have been successful in becoming part of the Academy and which team they will join in September 2019.

  • Beacon Film Festival

    Dates: 07 – 09 Feb, 2018

    Media students at Oaklands College will have the opportunity to have their cinematic creations shown on the big screen at this year’s Beacon Film Festival, to be held in Welwyn Garden City and you can secure a free TICKET to be at the public screening this February.

    This is the second year BTEC Creative Media and Foundation Degree students have been involved in the film festival with Hertfordshire’s Victim Care Centre Beacon, which invites filmmakers from all across the world to submit films focused on experiencing on being a victim of crime.

    In addition to a shortlist of films shown to audiences at the festival this year the event also will deliver a dynamic programme of filmmaking and victims’ awareness workshops to highlight the impact crime has on its victims.

    The festival will take place at Campus West in Welwyn Garden City from 7th – 9th February, culminating with screening on the submissions to the festival on the evening of Friday 9th February.

    All events are free of charge and open to anyone apart from the film screenings which are 15 or over.

  • Lambing Weekend

    Join us to meet our brand new lambs on the College Farm!

    In March we open our doors for our annual Lambing Weekend, which welcomes the local community to come and meet our newborn lambs.

    This year the event falls on Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th March 2018, giving a great opportunity to the whole family to enjoy a spring day out.

    What happens on the day?

    As well as seeing the lambs and ewes in our Lambing Barns, you will be able to learn about the different stages of lambing and chat to our Agriculture students, who are on call throughout lambing season supporting our College Farm Manger to deliver the expected 348 new arrivals this Spring.

    Our Equine and Animal Care departments will also be on hand to introduce you to some of our wider animal family including reptiles, rabbits and horses up at the Equine yard and in our Oaklands Habitat centre. For those interested, Oaklands College staff will be available to chat about our Land based courses which include Animal Care, Horticulture and Equine Studies.

    Take advantage of Donkey rides, our on-site Farmers Market, our Family games area and enjoy a wealth of hot a cold refreshments during your day. There’s even the opportunity to snap a memento in our Lambing Weekend family photo booth to make it a Mother’s Day to remember!

    Younger guests will be able to complete our ‘Farm Trail’ by picking up an activity sheet at the entrance – a great way to take in some fun farm facts as your work your way round.

    Admission

    Entry to the event is by ticket only. Each attendee will need to have their own ticket, unless under three years of age.

    You will need to book a chosen day, and an morning or afternoon slot. This is to help manage high volumes of visitors following feedback from last year’s event. The slots are just for entry and won't restrict the time you'd like to spend on site.

    For the afternoon ticket holders, we advise that you arrive no later than 2.30pm as the event ends at 3pm.

    Please note that out of respect for the welfare of our animals we cannot permit dogs on campus during this event.

    Parking and arrival on site

    We have commissioned a Park & Ride service which runs from the University of Hertfordshire, Angerlands, South Way, Hatfield AL10 8HS. Buses will run from about 9.45am throughout the day. We anticipate buses to run approximately every 20 minutes with the last bus departing about 3.30pm.

    St Albans Campus holds very limited parking with priority given to Blue Badge holders. We encourage all visitors to use the Park & Ride service, offering a transfer of just a few minutes which will bring you directly on site.

    Please have your tickets printed (or on the Eventbrite app) and ready to scan to ensure swift admission for your family.

    Please note that there are risks associated with lambing and pregnancy. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, we advise you that you do not attend the day.

  • Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy Trial

    Dates: 24 – 24 Feb, 2018

    We're holding a Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy trial for all those interested in joining a course with Oaklands. Find out more about the Academy, speak with the Academy Director and join us for a ride.

    The day is both for potential riders and their parents as an opportunity to learn more about your options at College and to learn more about our cycling offer.

    Format of the day

    We meet at the Atrium in Discovery Centre, located at our St Albans Campus at 10am for an introduction to the Academy delivered by the Academy Director, Jez Cox, along with some of the current academy riders.

    Potential riders will then embark on a two hour ride whilst parents and those accompanying the riders are free to either stay on or enjoy exploring locally.

    After that there is a break for lunch before a site tour, Q&A session and an opportunity for one to one discussions with Academy staff about the specifics of the Academy.

    We expect the event to finish by 3pm.

  • St Albans Wolves Football Academy Open Trials

    Dates: 06 – 06 Apr, 2018

    St Albans Wolves Football Academy have been in partnership with St Albans Football Club for 14 years creating pathways into semi-professional and professional football.

    Oaklands College provide fantastic opportunities for ambitious young players to continue their education in an excellent institution as well as work on developing their skills in sport.

    10.30: Arrival

    Please report to reception at the St Albans Campus after you have found a parking space and they will register you for free parking – then go to the Sapsed Room (in the Mansion House).

    11.00: Presentation
    Time for the parents to discuss the Academy and get to know each other. Topics may include academic options, bursary, accommodation, day-to-day life as a SAFA student athlete.  

    11.45: Practical
    Start of the trials, we’ll be training for just under two hours in a relaxed environment. Parents can use this time to ask our non-coaching staff any questions and have a College tour to check out the facilities Oaklands College has to offer.

    14.00: Finish

    The trials should be finished by 14:00. Due to circumstances on the day we advise parents to give us a half hour leeway (13:45 – 14:15). All our staff, including our coaches, will be available for any questions you may have after the trials.

  • Young Chef of the Year

    Dates: 10 – 10 Feb, 2018

    Oaklands College teams up with Lussmanns Fish & Grill for the annual Young Chef of the Year competition. Open to Year 10 and Year 11 students, the competition is a great opportunity to show off your cooking skills in front of a panel of experienced professionals.

    To enter the competition you would need to submit a recipe for either a starter, main course or dessert, with a photo of your dish, via our online form. All entries should be submitted by 26th January 2018 to be considered.

    Whether a starter, main course or dessert, your dish will be judged by a panel including:

    • Martin West, Head Chef at The Stables Restaurant
    • Andrei Lussmann, Founder of Lussmanns Restaurants
    • Becky Alexander, local food writer.

    The finals of the competition will take place on the 10th February 2018 when the aspiring young chefs will prepare their dishes at The Stables Restaurant, our state of the art catering facilities at Oaklands College.

    The overall winner will receive a £50 gift voucher for Lussmans Fish & Grill, work experience at the restaurant plus a trophy and framed certificate.  The two runners-up will receive a £25 gift voucher for Lussmans, a framed certificate and also work experience at College’s Stables Restaurant.

  • Twilight Tasters at WGC Campus

    Dates: 29 – 29 Nov, 2017

    A great opportunity for Year 11 students to gain some hands-on experience in a taster from a wide selection of subjects and find out what College life is really like.

    What is it all about?

    Students come in to our College one evening to attend a session run by our tutors. It's a great opportunity to get a feel for a subject you would like to pursue. Not only will you complete a session but you can also ask questions about your future options.

    Sessions are an hour long and should finish by 6pm. We ask that you come in before 5pm so we have time to take you to the right area of the College.
