Olympic hopefuls given opportunity at Oaklands

19 July 2010

As part of the build up to the Olympic Games in London, 2012, Oaklands College is offering five local athletes, aged 16-18 and from any Olympic sport, the opportunity to join their Elite Performance Academy.

The academy offers athletes the chance to receive high class training for their sport alongside studying for an academic qualification. Oaklands Elite Performance Academy has already produced successful athletes including Mike Perham, the youngest person to sail around the world, Ronnie Sparke, GBR cross country athlete, Carla Burkitt, European karate champion and Rhys Glastonbury, Welsh athletics champion.

Athletes can study any courses offered at Oaklands College and will receive support in physiotherapy, sports massage, nutrition advice, strength & conditioning and sport psychology, as well as training with other athletes.

Gary Anderson, Elite Performance coach, commented: "This is a unique opportunity for local athletes to continue their training and get some nationally recognised qualifications under their belt. We aren’t necessarily looking for champion performers, but athletes that show grit and determination to succeed – two extremely important qualities that winners must possess."
