Seventeen-year-old Saskia Presland from Graveley, near Stevenage, is one of only six students from across the UK to make it to the final of the Student Electrotherapy Beauty Therapist Awards in Brighton next month.
“I was quite shocked to hear that I had made the final as I had convinced myself that I wouldn’t get through so I wasn’t expecting it at all,” said Saskia, who is studying Beauty Therapy at the College’s Welwyn Garden City Campus.
Saskia, who works part-time as a spa therapist at Sopwell House in St Albans, was asked to create a portfolio which included a case study of a client’s treatment and a 5,000 word analysis of the treatment, why it was chosen and the results for the client.
“For the final I need to perform the treatment while being observed by a judge. I’m quite nervous but also excited. They want to see how I interact with the client and I have a lot of experience of that so I should be fine,” said the former Thomas Alleyne Academy student.
“We work with real clients on our course so we have been able to get hands on experience. Our teachers work really hard to teach us what we need to know and help build our confidence.”
The College’s Head of Beauty Tina Kemp said: “We are very proud of Saskia for getting to the final of these prestigious awards. It shows tremendous strength of character because this was a lot of extra work for Saskia but she didn’t give up. She will certainly go far in the beauty industry and whatever happens at the final, she’s a winner to us.”
