Young stars from the Oaklands College Athletics Academy have been selected for two prestigious competitions in July 2017.
On 1st and 2nd July, Treble World Finalist and Oaklands Academy student Rechmial Miller will compete at the World Championships Team Trials in Mannheim, Germany, along with team-mates Dominic Ashwell and Nick Stewart.
They will be gaining vital international experience, as they compete for selection to represent Great Britain in the European Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy on 20th to 23rd July.
Meanwhile, Oaklands students Chad Miller and Vera Chinedu have been selected for Team England to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games, at the Nassama Stadium in the Bahamas.
The Commonwealth Youth Games take place on 17th to 23rd July, and it’s the first time in over 50 years that a Commonwealth sporting event has been hosted in the Caribbean. With over 70 nations taking part, represented by more than 1,300 young athletes, this will be the biggest-ever Commonwealth Youth Games.
Ryan Freckleton, Head of the Athletics Academy at Oaklands College, said, “I’m so happy for all these athletes, not just because the prospect of competing on a global stage is so huge for them, but also because their fantastic progress proves the value of our approach at Oaklands College in combining learning and training.”
Oaklands College Principal Zoe Hancock adds, “We’re very proud of our young stars, and we’ll be cheering them on throughout these high-profile events. The success of these students shows that Oaklands has the facilities and the staff to produce world-class athletes and learners, and demonstrates our belief that excellence is about each of us striving to be the best we can.
"Combining learning in class and training in your chosen sport – whether that’s athletics or basketball, football or netball – is what makes such achievement possible.”
