Art, Fashion & Design students at Oaklands College have embarked on a creative and busy couple of months, inspiring the local community surrounding the college with their wide variety of art forms and creations.

Following on from the annual Art Exhibition at the St Albans Cathedral, a number of our fashion students recently worked with local bridal boutique store ‘Cerimonia’ on an exciting live-brief, set by Director and Owner; Helen Searle.

"We were approached by Oaklands College to work with their fashion students and we jumped at the opportunity. Their shirt brief fitted perfectly with our store and after consultation with the Head of Art, Fashion and Design, we sponsored the project, enabling students to design and make shirts."

Students were given the opportunity to visit the St Albans store, which is located opposite the cathedral on George Street, where they learnt about their tailoring business and made to measure shirts.

Students were shown examples of different shirt variations, how the company use a variety of materials, uniqueness of shirts and how to accessories each garment to give it an element of individuality.

After picking up their fabrics from the St Albans Market, students were able to create mood boards to develop their design ideas into a final concept.

"We were thrilled to be invited to their end of year fashion show, to see the shirts and showcase their designs in our shop window."

Cerimonia will be working again with Oaklands College in the near future, sponsoring the students on future projects and welcoming first year students to design future shirts.

Helen added: "We thoroughly enjoyed working with the students at Oaklands College and to play a small part in their fashion and design experience.
It was encouraging to see their creativity, passion and flair, whilst giving us the chance to work with designers of the future and showcase local talent!"
