Oaklands apprentice recognised with top sports award

The work of a dedicated apprentice from Oaklands was recognised when she scooped a top sports award. 

Chelzea Tayag, 19, was named U21 Volunteer of the Year at the recent Herts Service to Sport Awards. 

“I was really surprised to win but it was absolutely amazing. I felt very proud that the judges recognised my achievements because I really do love my job. My mum and dad were there on the night which was lovely,” said Chelzea, from London Colney. 

Chelzea, who moved to the UK from the Philippines when she was four, is a member of the UK Young Ambassadors group. As a platinum ambassador, she advises other young leaders, including play leaders, bronze ambassadors and other sports ambassadors, on how best to get children involved in sport and leadership. 

Chelzea is currently an apprentice at the College, working with the Sports Zone team, where she is getting valuable experience in leading play sessions and working with customers. 

“I chose an apprenticeship after doing my A Levels because I wanted to get into sports leadership management and the apprenticeship gives me the chance to work on the commercial side. I plan on going to university this year and the apprenticeship will give me huge advantage as I have spent my gap year working and gaining experience.” 

The College’s sports operations manager Orla Moore said: “We are all really proud of Chelzea for winning this award. She is a vital part of our Sports Zone team and works so hard to give our customers a great experience. We are really lucky to have her with us.”
