Oaklands College Achieves Bronze Accreditation from Hedgehog Friendly Campus

Oaklands College is delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Bronze accreditation from Hedgehog Friendly Campus. This esteemed national award scheme, part-funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, aims to protect hedgehogs, enhance their habitat, and raise awareness about their needs.

In a time when wildlife conservation is crucial, Oaklands College has been leading efforts to become a hedgehog-friendly campus. Spearheading this initiative is Elizabeth Healey, Lecturer in Animal Care and the college’s Staff Hedgehog Ambassador. Healey, along with a dedicated team of students, has been working diligently to transform the college’s green spaces into havens for hedgehogs and other wildlife.

The Hedgehog Friendly Campus initiative recognises the collective efforts of staff and students who work together to implement impactful changes for hedgehogs and other wildlife around their institution. Oaklands College’s efforts are part of a broader mission to address the alarming decline in hedgehog populations across Britain. Healey explains,

“Hedgehogs are facing numerous threats, from habitat loss to garden hazards. Our college campus offers ample space that could serve as a sanctuary for these beloved creatures.”

In addition to participating in a class litter pick on 16th November 2023, and organising a successful Hedgehog Charity Day earlier in the year, Healey and the students have played a key role in fostering a cleaner and safer environment for hedgehogs. These litter-picking initiatives and other activities are integral parts of the college’s ongoing hedgehog-friendly campaign.

To gain recognition as a Hedgehog Friendly Campus, Oaklands College has completed several tasks outlined by the HFC project. These include raising awareness through educational campaigns, redesigning green spaces, and organising litter picks. Healey emphasises that these initiatives are not one-off events but are embedded in the college’s ethos of continuous environmental stewardship.

The Bronze accreditation highlights our commitment to creating a welcoming environment for hedgehogs and underscores our broader dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation. The positive response from both students and staff has been overwhelming, and these projects have provided valuable learning experiences, fostering skills in teamwork, research, and practical conservation efforts.
