A zoo in St Albans has opened its doors to the public for the summer holidays.
Oaklands Zoo – at Oaklands College on Hatfield Road – features lemurs, marmosets, meerkats and reptiles among others.
The location will be open on Sundays for the next month, allowing visitors to see the animals during their summer holidays.
“A wide range of species and exotic animals” will be on show at the St Albans campus, along with a range of livestock, a fully functioning equine yard and the Habitat Centre.
Oaklands College’s Habitat Centre is where students obtain practical experience in handling and husbandry.
A number of demos and talks will also take place, including owl talks, invertibrate handling demos, lemur talks and “meerkat mayhem”.
The college’s deputy principal Claire Dolan said: “Our zoo offers a cheap and cheerful way for families to learn about nature and have a lovely morning or afternoon out this summer.
“Oaklands is so much more than a college and many people don’t know about our animals, our equine centre or indeed the huge outside space we have here, which means we can put on family-friendly music and food festivals like the very popular Oakfest which was on at the start of this month.
“We have so much going on here, and the zoo in particular is a great reminder that we are a centre of learning of all kinds, for all ages, including the very young, and including families, and we have been a valued part of the community for 100 years now.”
The zoo will be open from 10am until 4pm every Sunday from July, with tickets currently available until September 3.
Morning sessions will run from 10am until 1pm, with afternoons from 1pm until 4pm.
Each session will cost £7 each, with children under the age of three attending for free.
Tickets can be booked, and further information can be found, via the Oaklands College Zoo webpage: www.oaklands.ac.uk/oaklands-zoo
