Oaklands sheep wins top prize at county show

NEWBURY, Berkshire — Students from Oaklands College’s new Agriculture course had cause for celebration when they showed some of the college’s pedigree Suffolk sheep at the Royal County of Berkshire Show last weekend.

The sheep, which can be recognised by their black faces and stocky builds, were well received at the show, with one ewe being named ‘the best Suffolk sheep.’

The students helped prepare some of the sheep for their big moment while the college’s Farm Manager Del Knowles presented the sheep to the judges and spectators.

The champion ewe, which was awarded the Ernest Juer Perpetual Cup, was born and raised on the college’s farm along with the rest of the flock, and will hopefully produce lambs of her own next year.

Karen Hood, the college’s Co-ordinator in Animal Care, said: “The students worked really hard at getting the sheep ready to be shown, and making sure they displayed the standards specific to the Suffolk breed which the judges would be looking out for.”
