An Oaklands Graphic Design student got an early Christmas
present when he won a competition to design a Christmas card.

Sixteen-year-old Sam Gallagher (pictured above) was on work
experience with digital design agency Daymedia when he designed the card for the
Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region (ACER).

“I was thrilled at being chosen from amongst all the entries
from colleges from the Eastern Region. I feel that achievements like this are
important in helping me secure a place at the university that I wish to study
at,” said Sam, from Hitchin.

Sam played on ACER’s slogan ‘putting learning first’ and thought about the
first learning experiences that we encounter as children, starting our education
by learning simple letters, numbers and shapes and shapes.

“Luckily, it was very easy to translate simple shapes
into a design and thus most of the shapes on the card are the first that we might
have ever encountered,” said Sam.

The aspiring graphic designer credits his success
to the thorough introduction he had on the Graphic Design course at Oaklands.

“Not only were we taught the skills necessary
in design, but our tutors organised live briefs with real-world clients, which
are fantastic opportunities to experience the industry first-hand and
potentially gain some reward at the same time,” said Sam, who plans to continue his education in Graphic
Design at Brighton University next year.
